| Editorial Reviews: | | |  | | John Boyne's The Boy in Striped Pyjamas will no doubt acquire many readers as a result of the subsequent film of the novel, but viewers of the latter would do themselves a favour by going back to the spare and powerfully affecting original book. Bruno is nine years old, and the Nazis? horrific Final Solution to the ?Jewish Problem? means nothing to him. He's completely unaware of the barbarity of Germany under Hitler, and is more concerned by his move from his well-appointed house in Berlin to a far less salubrious area where he finds himself with nothing to do. Then he meets a boy called Shmuel who lives a very different life from him -- a life on the opposite side of a wire fence. And Shmuel is the eponymous boy in the striped pyjamas, as are all the other people on the other side of the fence. The friendship between the two boys begins to grow, but for Bruno it is a journey from blissful ignorance to a painful knowledge. And he will find that this learning process carries, for him, a daunting price. A legion of books have attempted to evoke the horrors of the Second World War, but in this concise and perfectly honed novel, all of the effects that John Boyne creates are allowed to make a maximum impact in a relatively understated fashion (given the enormity of the situation here). The Boy in Striped Pyjamas is also that rare thing: a novel which can affect both children and adults equally; a worthy successor, in fact, to such masterpieces as To Kill a Mockingbird and The Catcher in the Rye -- both, of course, books, dealing (as does this one) with the loss of innocence. --Barry Forshaw | |

| | Ich bin ja gar kein Fan von "La vita é bella", deshalb war ich sehr zurückhaltend bei diesem Buch, obschon es mir von allen Seiten empfohlen worden war. Es hat sich aber gelohnt! Hier findet sich eine einfühlsame, glaubhafte und extrem tragische Geschichte, welche sehr ans Herz geht. Traurig, auch für Kinder verständlich, mit grossem Einfühlungsvermögen. Ich kann es uneingeschränkt empfehlen.

| | I was in Barcelona last month where the film based on this novel has already been released and I was quite touched by it. Very powerful and emotional and I was quite unprepared for the ending. After watching the movies I want to read the novel and this one of the few instances where I think the movie is just as powerful as the book. Usually movie adaptations leave something to be desired but not in this case. Maybe it is a good idea first to read the novel and then watch the movie. Still, the novel is very good to read and I finished it within a day or two, simply because I wanted to know the way the author ends it. It is very convincing and portrays the horrors of the holocaust out of the perspective of a very young and innocent boy. He never understand even at the end, but the reader knows better. This contrast between the knowledgeable reader and the innocent child is quite heartbreaking. Though it is marketed as a childrens book I think any adult will be captivated by this fable, too. Very recommendable.
| | | A great story set in Nazi Germany told from the perspective of a nine year old boy. His father happens to become commander of a death camp. So the family moves to Poland to a house within sight of the camp. Uprooted from his native Berlin the boy, Bruno, is without friends and in a world he fails to comprehend. From there on the story takes its path.
To fully understand the book readers have to know about the Nazi ideology, the persecution of Jews and death camps because most of these things are not mentioned explicitly. That's of course because Bruno does not understand them. And who would tell a nine year old?
To get the most out of the book readers should definitely be older than twelve years. The language of the book is easy to read. I do recommend reading this book very much.

Toll geschrieben, spannend, traurig - ein durch und durch geniales Buch, das man auch gut auf Englisch lesen kann.

I was impressed as of page 1 and couldn't put it down. In awe at every page. Read it in one day !
